Lessons with a positive memorable experience need planning...

Planning Lessons:

If you fail to plan,  you plan to fail.

It starts with the lesson objectives. Very many  teachers underestimate the impact  of ensuring that the objectives are SMAT:

Simple  - use simple verbs
Measurable  - be able to judge how well
Attainable  - realistic actions
Time bound - allocate timings

Ensure that you set an objective for each ability   so,  list (everyone can do this)  should be one. For younger children,  touch,  show,  say can be used.
Describe,  explain, recall,  compare are for a higher  level.
Apply,  construct,  utilize,  for even higher levels.

Remember Blooms Taxonomy?  Use it!

Make sure that you share the objectives with your learners at the beginning of the lesson,  so that they have  a focus for  achievement.

From time to time  refer to it audibly.

At the end of the lesson ensure that your assessment of the lesson  tests for understanding in:
the Affective Domain (attitude )
the Psychomotor Domain (skills)
the Cognitive  Domain  (knowledge )

Let them self assess (you are teaching reflective skill)  by seeing if they met the objectives for the lesson.

You are then sure that you indeed guided and moved their learning forward.

Be intentional in delivering a positive,  memorable learning experience in all your lessons this week 😎

It's end of the session and prize-giving/Award presentation day is coming.
As teachers and schools, we should identify children who show empathy and other aspects of Emotional Intelligence and reward them in age-appropriate ways.
Awards should be given to the kindest/most caring /most thoughtful in the class.
Is your school going to reward and motivate Emotional Intelligence through awards to identifiable ambassadors of EQ
(Emotional Intelligence)? ðŸ˜Ž

Just how important is Emotional Intelligence(EQ) in our classes?

How much higher has your EQ gone since last academic session?

Remember, you cannot give what you don't have and you certainly can't teach what you don't know!

Emotional intelligence enables people to have positive interactions with each other, anticipate other people's thoughts and feelings and show appropriate degrees of empathy.

Research has proved that EQ can be linked to the level of bullying and self esteem found in schools and the society at large.

The higher a person's EQ, the higher the self esteem and the lesser the tendency to become a bully, be affected by bullies, or succumb to drastic actions that will assuage the feeling of low self esteem.

Enable a high level of Emotional Intelligence (EQ) in your class, talk to the children, be a living daily lesson... ðŸ˜Ž

Organization In The Classroom

Start off the year with one of the things that contribute to successful Classroom management:

 -Good Organization -

Everything inclusive of how you welcome the learners as they come into your classroom,  the class environment,  seating arrangements, lesson planning,  lesson delivery,  class  activities and the way you communicate with your pupils.

It also includes making your expectations clear,  giving them prompt feedback,  involving other adults in the class, all the details down to how the learners leave the class...

All this must be in an orderly, functional and structured manner to be termed
'good organization of the classroom'

Let your class be tagged 'The Good-organization class' this year.  😎

Why do children have poor academic performance?

We often just judge and get angry and exasperated with learners who perform poorly.
Have we stopped to think of what the cause(s) could be?

What could have happened at home?
What is happening in school?
What is happening in the child's personal world?

What are the signs to look out for (red flags)?

In your experience,  what remedy would you  or your team proffer?

Remember EVERY CHILD MATTERS!

Tuesday 9 July 2019

Reflection Time...

''Academic performance means the extent to which a student, teacher or institution has achieved their short or long-term educational goals”
Wikipedia

How was the academic performance of the learners in your class this academic session?
Would you say their performance was good or poor or in between?

From the definition given by Wikipedia, POOR academic performance means a student, teacher or institution has NOT achieved their short or long-term educational goals.

Research has shown that learners perform poorly due to the following reasons:
•Abuse
•Bad teaching/inadequate lessons
•Stress
•Fear
•Tension
•Financial challenges at home
•Health issues
•Laziness
•Inadequate study time
•Lack of study materials
•Broken home
•Doubt

Do you know that way before the performance of learners become poor, there are symptoms  you should look out for? These are called RED FLAGS.

Seamless transitions, poor transitions, no transitions...Transitions make or break a lesson 😎

Classroom Management 1D

If transitions are not well planned and executed, the lesson objectives will not be met and that lesson will not be satisfactory.
Well executed or seamless transitions on the other hand, contribute towards an outstanding lesson.
Have the lessons you were observed teaching and in which you were rated as giving an unsatisfactory performance been because of poor or absent transitions?
Learn how to factor in transitions during your lessons 😎

Saturday 1 June 2019

Tips on qualitative observation of a lesson 😎

#Assessment Of Teachers while Observing their lessons:

How does the teacher introduce the lesson? What is the starter? Does it hook their attention or is it boring?

How is the lesson introduced?

Are expectations and lesson objectives made known clearly?

Is learning guided, led or ignored?

Are learning tasks differentiated?

Are qualitative resources used to move learning forward during this lesson?

Is collaboration amongst learners planned for and implemented?

Are the lesson objectives gone back to at some point during the lesson to keep on track?

How were the transitions, if any?

Were  all 3 domains of learning assessed?

Is there a plenary? Does the teacher take cognizance of the result of this plenary?

Did the teacher show reflection on the last lesson's mistake with a view to improvement in this lesson?

Did every child achieve and learn during this lesson?

Was this lesson a poor, satisfactory, good or outstanding lesson?

When you go and observe a lesson or if you are going to be observed, do you factor in all the above? 😎

Friday 31 May 2019

Keep working on your practice to bring about improvement.😎

'A sea that does not have water flowing into it becomes dead, dead seas stink'
- proverb

Don't live on past glory! Always strive to improve. Watch other colleagues teach live or via the internet. Keep working on your practice to bring about improvement.
Reflection and being open to coaching and mentoring are very vital towards good classroom management.
How seriously are you taking this aspect of your development? ðŸ˜Ž

Wednesday 29 May 2019

How effectively have you been assessing your lessons? 😎

Assessment is used to monitor teaching and inform planning.

At the end of every lesson, were you able to use various assessment strategies to judge if the lesson objectives were met and identify what you could do better?

We have completed half of the last term of the academic session. How effectively have you used assessment to inform your day to day teaching activities so far? 😎

Monday 20 May 2019

Using Assessment to turn round underachievement

Assessment is used to detect students who are underachieving so that prompt remedies can be proffered.

Have you been using your assessments to identify under achieving students in your class? Have you had a word with them to let them know they need to get back on target?

Did you set targets for them in the first place? 😎

Monday 13 May 2019

Transitions are very important in a lesson

Transitions And Classroom Management

The changes in the activities during a lesson, which help to break up the monotony that could creep into a lesson and make it boring, are called transitions.
Think back to when you were a young student, what made lessons boring or positively memorable for you?
The more seamless the transition, the better. Learners will hardly notice because it just flows from one activity, to another and learning is fun. Can you remember this aspect of your best lessons?
Does your planning include the ‘when’ and ‘what’ of transitions? 😎

Sunday 12 May 2019

How you respond to wrong answers in your class matters😎

Assessment

Even when answers given by learners are wrong, they inform the next stage of learning and help correct any misconception promptly.

It is best to give a clear, colorful and tactful response without discouraging the student who has given a wrong answer.

How do you respond to wrong answers during your lessons? 😎

Assessing your performance thus far.....

It's the 3rd and final term of the session.
Have you been  diligently monitoring the goals you set from the SIP for the session?

How far and just how well have you done so far?

Have you done a comparative analysis of the performance in academics in the various classes, how did the graph look?

What about performance in the other areas you planned to improve on?

What can be done to salvage or improve within these 'dying-moments' of the session?

It's never too late - more attention can still be given to those identified children, in those identified subjects.

Effective inspiration that can yield results, can still be given to your team.

Where there's a will there is a way!

Wednesday 8 May 2019

Teach emotional Intelligence, teach ACTIVE listening 😎

Emotional Intelligence

Conversation as a social skill can be awkward and difficult to acquire, but as you encourage your children to continue to supply the information while they are expressing their feelings, as you listen and draw them out, you help them to master the art of conversation.

Providing the right kind of information during conversation is an important social skill that our children need to acquire now against the future when they will be handling more mature conversations.

We as teachers, need to disabuse the cultural mindset that it is only the 'local gossip' (amebo/gbeborun) that ACTIVELY LISTENS to what is being said and what is going on and 'polite people' ignore emotive reactions around them.

Are you helping the learners in your class to develop the art of conversation by teaching them to ACTIVELY listen? 😎

Tuesday 7 May 2019

Getting your classroom well laid out AHEAD of time pays😎

Classroom Management1C

Cast your mind back to when you were in school as a student... were the lessons you enjoyed and in which you achieved the most, held in a well laid out or a muddled classroom?

Let's invest that little extra time and effort in getting everything ready, we'll ahead of when the children would be coming into the classroom - it pays😎

Monday 29 April 2019

Assessment includes Teachers as well 😎

Assessment

This is the final term for the session.
Performance appraisal shouldn't just be for students.

How will schools carry out a qualitative Performance appraisal of each teacher?

Is there a School Improvement Plan and was the SIP shared at the onset of the session?

Were school wide, department and personal goals teased out from the SIP and were they understood by all?

Were these goals monitored over the year at the various levels of the school?

Which teacher kept on top of it all?

Were 'drop-ins' vis-a-vis formal observations done and recorded to assess the teachers' lessons?

Was the teacher monitored in terms of contributions during co-curricular activities?

Rate the teacher's relationship with students, peers, subordinates, line managers and parents - how well?

Do you do tests for basic updated mastery level of Numeracy, literacy, general knowledge and ICT skills for ALL the teachers?

Has the teacher demonstrated interest in continuing to improve without waiting for you to be the sponsor?

Do you intend to have a 360 degree assessment done for each teacher?

Assessment of performance can't be slap-dash, your school's pedigree depends on it's integrity 😎

Sunday 28 April 2019

How organized and inviting is your classroom environment? 😎

Classroom Management - The classroom environment:

Looking back, when I consider the circumstances under which I learnt best as a young student in the primary and secondary schools and the classroom arrangements that impeded my learning, I know that creating a conducive teaching environment that is orderly and that meets the needs of individual students is ideal. It starts their day right.

Is your classroom environment ready for your children each time they come in? 😎

Assessment:

At the National, State, Local district, School and Classroom levels, Assessment is:

"Accountability of the various providers and of the system as a whole"
Viv Ellis

Is your school conscious of this mandate of accountability at all these levels? Do assessments in your school reflect this consciousness? 😎

What level of positive relationships can be observed in your class? 😎

Checklist for level of positive relationships in your class:

Level of inclusiveness?
Degree of anger management?
Effectiveness of role-modelling?

Wednesday 17 April 2019

Every child has a right to access learning in your class 😎

Classroom Management:

As Head of Early Years back then, I observed differentiation demonstrated in a very satisfactory way by excellent practitioners (cudos to Oyinye Nwankpa and Dodeye Jude) in the Nursery section of a school in Abuja, Nigeria. Each child was carried along at his or her own pace, while both the class teacher and the assistant teacher effectively enabled and monitored learning.

Does every child really matter in your class, do you differentiate your lessons effectively? 😎

The power of a Teacher's voice

Classroom Management Verbal communication and you... Does your voice during lessons invite learners to listen or does it trigger a "shut down" to their learning experience? 😎

Are you teaching them to channel their emotions positively? 😎

Emotional Intelligence "Emotions are messages..." Dr.Laura Markham Let's teach younger children to breathe through their emotions without needing to act on them. Let's teach older children to talk it out ; apologize... teach them to find a positive way out of these emotions and do something beneficial. What are you doing to help your students channel their emotions positively? 😎

Friday 29 March 2019

Is your judgment based on thorough understanding of the student's learning?

Assessment The Encarta dictionary (North American English) defines assessment as: 'a judgment about something based on an understanding of the situation' Have the ongoing exams and your continuous assessment scores, really given you an understanding, of the situation in your class, enough for you to make the judgment you are giving, in the children's report? 😎

Thursday 28 March 2019

How effectively do you use your voice to move learning forward?

Classroom Management

''A teacher's voice is crucial. It's like a musical instrument and if you play it well, then your pupils will be an appreciative and responsive audience''

Susan Capel

On the other hand, when children are exposed to sarcasm, it robs them of their self esteem and they tend to react by exhibiting off task behavior.

Are you one of the
'shouting teachers'? 😎

Teach each child Emotional Intelligence and you eventually, powerfully, influence a Nation...

Emotional Intelligence

The higher the emotional intelligence of our learners, the lesser the disruptions during classes. and

The rippling effect would be lesser misunderstandings prevailing in the School

....extrapolate and you'll find a caring government in place and a people that are patriotic of their country.

See why we need to teach Emotional Intelligence to our students? 😎

Monday 25 March 2019

What exactly do you do with the results of your assessments?

Assessment

Assessments are meant to be monitoring understanding and diagnosing factors that may be blocking learning.

Each time I teach I'm monitoring if my students understand. If they don't, I find out what may be blocking learning and look for a way to make the lesson accessible to them.

Do you make an effort to use the results of your assessments to redesign the lesson so that those that don't understand do?

Every child has a right to understand your lesson. 😎

Does your classroom setting ignite learning?

Classroom Management

'The classroom is more than a room with chairs, desks and a teaching board of some kind...it should promote and support pupil learning'

Susan Heightman

Setting up the classroom before students arrive is a great tool towards achieving classroom management and a successful learning environment.

How often do you take time to set up your classroom before the students come in? 😎

Genuine praise is an effective Classroom Management tool... try it!

Classroom Management

Praise helps to improve classroom management and could therefore be said to be an important factor in creating a successful learning environment.

Look for genuine opportunities for each child in your class to be praised, don't withhold praise when deserved.
Don't praise your students behind their backs, praise them when they are there.

Do you praise your students? 😎

Does summative assessment give the true picture?

#Assessment

Sometimes, a normally high performing student performs poorly in an exam due to nerves, poor health or a domestic situation.

Conversely, an average student who has received unrelenting coaching towards the exams may do excellently well
and then come out as the best student.

Same thing with teacher's assessment, a good teacher on a normal day may come across as fair or even poor if the students act up or something happens at home or on the way to work, the day she/he is being formally observed.

So, does summative assessment really give a true picture of the student's performance? 😎

Tuesday 19 March 2019

Temper, temper!!

Emotional Intelligence

For younger children try:

'... you are so angry that teacher told you to do that work again; come and we will do  it together...'

instead of shouting at the child or hitting him or her as many teachers would be tempted to do!

For the older ones in high school, something like:

'... you seem to have had a bad day so far today but storming out of the class and banging the door has not shown maturity on your part or made it better. Why don't you sit down and tell me all about it and let's see what we can do ' - will work much better.

What do you think? 😎

Monday 18 March 2019

Let's learn from each other... peer mentoring works!

Classroom Management

Peer mentoring, reflection, coaching - all with a view to improving on identified areas of challenges...

How often and how effectively is this done? 😎

Friday 15 March 2019

Take a deep breath and model emotional self management!

Emotional
Intelligence

... If we show disapproval, anger or fear, to how the children express their emotions, there's a tendency for children to repress these feelings. This is very dangerous as trapped feelings will look for a way and come out in horrible ways...

How often do you take a deep breath and model emotional self management? 😎

Thursday 14 March 2019

Using questioning effectively during lessons

Assessment

During lessons, questioning should not be used just to find out what the learners know but for teaching as well because effective use of questioning encourages interactive teaching AND learning.

Have you been using questioning, during your lessons, effectively? 😎

Every Child Matters - differentiate your lessons

C
lassroom Management

For a learner to be successful in a given task, derive satisfaction from the achievement and become motivated by it, the task must be at the learner's level of understanding.

Do you differentiate your lessons? 😎

Tuesday 12 March 2019

It's about demonstrating Emotional Intelligence, not just telling...

Emotional Intelligence

Just being understood helps us to let go of the emotions that are troubling us. It's not a case of a teacher telling the children to be empathetic and yet not understanding why a child whose parents have broken up and are living apart is always not paying attention in the class.

Have you taken time to talk with the child and show that you care?😎

Monday 11 March 2019

Assessment - an answer to learning needs

Assessment

A teacher should assess his or her students learning on a daily basis in order to be able to be able to give an appropriate response to their learning needs.

How often do you assess the learning going on in your class?😎

Sunday 10 March 2019

What motivates you and how do you motivate?

Classroom Management bk 1d

THE RIGHT USE OF MOTIVATION:

Success motivates everyone.
If a learner successfully completes a given task and meets the objectives of a lesson, he or she is motivated to do more in subsequent lessons and is less likely to go off task.

Try intrinsic motivation to enable your students to excel and see what happens next. 😎

Saturday 9 March 2019

Active listening versus 'just listening'

EmotionalIntelligence

People need to feel safe letting out feelings as they talk to you, they need to know that you are fully with them and listening objectively as they express these feelings.

Active listeners are said to have better social skills.

Active listening models excellent behavior to the children.

Are you an active listener? 😎

How well has this term's learning gone so far?

#Assessment2b'

Summative assessment could best be summarized thus:

'... a picture of current achievements derived from information gathered over a period of time in order to set future targets'

Harlen, et al

The term is drawing to a close and we need to assess just how much learning actually took place in our classes.

Will your exams be set in such a way that you can really get an objective answer to the question -  how much learning #actually took place in our classes? 😎

Monday 4 March 2019

The effect of seamless transitions on your lessons ...

Classroom Management Bk1c

The starter, main body and plenary, constitute the major parts of a lesson but could be interspaced should the teacher desire, with mini plenaries and activities which take account of the various learning styles...

Moving from one aspect of the lesson to another (taking into account all the abilities and learning styles of the learners) and keeping in mind the objectives and outcomes you want to achieve... constitute transitions.

How do you plan transitions in your lessons to keep your learners constantly engaged and learning? 😎

Sunday 3 March 2019

Charismatic versus bully - a function of Emotional Intelligence

Emotional Intelligence

People who have a high EQ (emotional quotient ie emotional intelligence) have both high academic performance and high social development.

Have you observed that the most popular seniors in school in the eyes of more junior students, are the ones that are smart AND show that they care about them - regularly asking them how they are doing?

The least popular seniors are those that bully and show they don't care...

Wouldn't our schools and ultimately our Country be a better place if only we could equip our children successfully, with Emotional Intelligence? 😎

Saturday 2 March 2019

The tool of assessment - what value does it measure?

#Assessment2a

What exactly do you assess?

The 'value' being measured by the tool of assessment is the actual learning that has taken place.
How much did they learn and how well did they learn it?

Do you consider this when you are planning assessment for your learners? 😎

Wednesday 27 February 2019

Fail to plan, plan to fail... Is that you?

Classroom Management...

'... if you do not plan carefully, you may find yourself taking too long over some of the content and not leaving yourself enough time...'

Susan Capel

Don't fail to plan each step of your lesson or else you are definitely planning to fail in some parts of your lesson. 😎

Monday 25 February 2019

Teach emotional intelligence, MODEL it!

#EmotionalIntelligence3

One of the things we can do to make our learners emotionally intelligent is to teach them EMPATHY.

Talk to them about compassion, sympathy, concern, kindness, caring about other people's feelings.

Most importantly, MODEL it yourself as you interact with other people.

'Do as I do, as I walk the talk'😎

Sunday 24 February 2019

Using diagnostic assessments to meet the needs of your students

#Assessment2a

One of the purposes of assessment is to diagnose learning difficulties and students with additional needs.

Every child has the right to achieve their full potential no matter their social, religious, ethnic, cultural or linguistic challenge.

How effective is your Additional Needs Support Department/Unit (formerly SEN) in using the results of the diagnostic assessments, to meet the learning needs of these students, in your school?
Do you even have this facility as a service in your school? 😎

The power of a well laid out classroom on learning

#ClassManagement1c

How often do you set up your classroom before students arrive? 😎

'The classroom is more than a room with chairs, desks and a teaching board of some kind... it should promote and support pupil learning'

Susan Heightman

Saturday 23 February 2019

Just how emotionally intelligent are you?

The more the children in a school are able to identify and process their own emotions and the emotions of those around them, the less the disruptions we will be having during classes and the misunderstandings that will prevail in the school.

Are you equipping your learners with Emotional Intelligence? 😎

Friday 22 February 2019

#Assessment2a

The primary purpose of assessment is to improve students' learning and teachers' teaching as both respond to the information it provides.

Do you honestly use assessments for this purpose or do you assess just to fulfill all righteousness? 😎

Thursday 21 February 2019

#ClassroomManagement1B

Sometimes, teachers act based on their mindsets which often affect how they deliver their lessons and consequently, the self esteem of their students.

Roll away mindsets and don't allow bias to affect your lessons and the learning of your students. #EveryChildMatters 😎
